At the height of the Great Depression, more than a quarter million teenagers were living on the road in America, many criss-crossing the country by illegally hopping freight trains. This PBS American Experience documentary tells the story of ten of these teenage hobos -- from the reasons they left home to what they experienced -- all within the context of depression-era America.

Tree Army: The Civilian Conservation Corps in Washington State, 1933-1942

Historian Janet Oakley will talk about the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps camps in Washington and explore the impact they had on our state’s natural resources and on the men who worked to preserve them.

The Great Depression hits home for nine-year-old Kit Kittredge when her dad loses his business and leaves home to find work. Abigail Breslin starts as Kit, in the first-ever American Girl theatrical movie. Enjoy the movie and some authentic 1930’s-style snacks!

Travel back in time to the 1930s for an afternoon of hands-on fun! Experience life in Hooverville, shop 1930s-style, learn hobo symbols, perform a radio show, and taste Mock Apple Pie.

“The Dust Bowl chronicles the worst man-made ecological disaster in American history, in which the frenzied wheat boom of the "Great Plow-Up," followed by a decade-long drought during the 1930s nearly swept away the breadbasket of the nation.”  Ken Burns’ documentary contains interviews and seldom-seen footage of the devastation of the dust bowl, bringing to life the story of incredible human suffering and equally incredible human perseverance.

PBS’ American Experience tells the story of one of the most remarkable thoroughbred racehorses in history, Seabiscuit, who was the long shot that captured America's heart during the Depression. The March of the Bonus Army chronicles the march of more than 45,000 World War I veterans to Washington in 1921 in an effort to collect the bonus promised to them for their military service.

Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse

When Billie Jo is just fourteen she must endure heart-wrenching ordeals that no child should have to face. The quiet strength she displays while dealing with unspeakable loss is as surprising as it is inspiring.  Written in free verse, this award-winning story is set in the heart of the Great Depression. It chronicles Oklahoma's staggering dust storms, and the environmental--and emotional--turmoil they left in their path.

Local musicians Dale Vallandigham, Bob Hopkins and Bill Johnson will share music from the 1930s and beyond.
